I haven’t been getting out nearly as much as I did before the whole pandemic thing but I do my best. Last night I grabbed my Canon 1DX II and the 70-200mm and set off for the empty Lakehead University campus. It’s not the lightest walking around combo, but it doesn’t really bother me. I’m used to carrying out cameras for 8-10 a day at weddings. Plus, it is such an amazing combo. I’m glad I ended up using my zoom for the walk as it allowed me to capture my favourite photo of the walk, a fox running around campus, which you can see from the header image.

There has been a lot of photos on Facebook in regards to the giant ice along the shore on Lake Superior. I’m not really one to shoot what everyone else is taking photos of, but I knew I had to at least check it out. It’s always amazing, discovering new areas in a city (a smaller one at that) in which you have lived in for the better part of your life. With my Canon 1DX II and my point and shoot camera in hand, I set out to see what all the fuss was about.

Often times when I go for photo walks, I simply stick to one area and explore. This time around, I ended up driving to a bunch of different locations. It was a nice change, and it allowed me to capture different parts of the city. The main reason I wanted to get out today for a bit was because it was kind of foggy out. Foggy weather is my favourite kind of atmosphere to take photos in. I think everything just looks great.

This is just a quick post. Anne and I got out the other evening for quick walk around downtown Port Arthur. I wanted to keep testing out the new (yet old) Canon 1DX II. As I continue to use it more and more, I’m realizing how much of a capable camera it is. Not that that was ever in question. Strangely enough, I find myself shooting vertically a lot more. Which is strange because I do have battery grips for all my other cameras.

It’s easy to think you have to go somewhere beautiful to take photos. I think a lot of photographers get discouraged by that thought, and it forces them to simply not take photographs. I look at it a bit differently. I see beauty in the ordinary things. Today I decided to just walk around my neighbourhood and see what I could find. I brought my Canon 1DX II along with the 35mm 2.0. Admittedly, I really wanted to just use my usual 50mm 1.2 lens, but I forced myself to use a different focal length. The great thing about the 35mm is that you can focus pretty close with it, which I love doing.

I woke up today, and as I usually do, I looked out the window. To my surprise, I saw snow falling. Lots of it. I knew I had to get out for walk, no matter how cold. I looked at the weather forecast on my phone and it said .. ‘feels like -25’. Yikes. After some breakfast and easing into the morning, I decided it was time. My wife always gets made at me for not dressing warm enough. Well, if she saw me, she would have been extremely proud.
