Often times when I go for photo walks, I simply stick to one area and explore. This time around, I ended up driving to a bunch of different locations. It was a nice change, and it allowed me to capture different parts of the city. The main reason I wanted to get out today for a bit was because it was kind of foggy out. Foggy weather is my favourite kind of atmosphere to take photos in. I think everything just looks great.
Another reason I was anxious to take photos was because I wanted to continue to put my new lens to the test. It’s been a long time coming, but I ended up getting the Canon 70-200 2.8 III. Even though it’s for my paid work, such as events and weddings, I figured why not take out for some urban photography. Some people might scoff walking around with such a big combo (paired with the 1DX II), but it doesn’t bother me in the slightest.
For my personal stuff, (and actually for most of my paid work), I’m almost always shooting prime lenses. It was definitely a different experience shooting with a zoom lens such as the 70-200. But it opened up a whole new way of shooting for me. That’s not to say I haven’t used zoom lenses before, but it has been a while, aside from a few walks here and there.
I started at Hillcrest Park, then made my way to Mission Island. My goal was to get a couple close up photos of deers but it just didn’t happen. There weren’t that many out, at least that I could see, and the ones that I did see, ran away from me. It wasn’t until I was driving back that I saw a group of them on the lake. I decided to pull over and walk back on the main road to see if they were still there. As I arrived, they were starting to run away, but one stayed back for a split second. He probably thought I had a gun, but I managed to get one good shot!
My last last destination for the morning was the bridge in Westfort. I didn’t really know what I wanted to capture there, but I actually came away with some really unique photos. All in all, it was a pretty good morning with a wide selection of keepers. I might even get out a bit more this afternoon and test this lens out for video. I’m just trying to decide on a location!
