I haven’t been getting out nearly as much as I did before the whole pandemic thing but I do my best. Last night I grabbed my Canon 1DX II and the 70-200mm and set off for the empty Lakehead University campus. It’s not the lightest walking around combo, but it doesn’t really bother me. I’m used to carrying out cameras for 8-10 a day at weddings. Plus, it is such an amazing combo. I’m glad I ended up using my zoom for the walk as it allowed me to capture my favourite photo of the walk, a fox running around campus, which you can see from the header image.
Seeing Lakehead University empty really isn’t all that strange. After all, summers are pretty much like that anyways. But knowing why it’s empty right now, does make it somewhat weird. In any case, it was super relaxing, and fun, to just wander around see what I could photography.
Some people might think that using a zoom lens is lazy. I am most definitely a prime lens type of photographer and it is my preference. Using my 70-200 though, challenges me to compose differently. In all honesty, it also allows me to get shots I couldn’t get with a prime. So, both have their benefits. Plus, I still move my feet and work angles with the zoom lens. Changing your perspective, even if it’s just crouching, can completely alter a composition for the better.
I saw the fox a couple times during my walk. The first time I was still too far away. Luckily, the second time, I was a bit closer. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the best backdrop but what can you do? Sometimes you just take the photo and see how it turns out.
I’m looking forward to getting back into the routine of my daily photo walks. I’m not sure if I’ll be using the giant zoom every time, but I guess you will have to come back to find out!
