There has been a lot of photos on Facebook in regards to the giant ice along the shore on Lake Superior. I’m not really one to shoot what everyone else is taking photos of, but I knew I had to at least check it out. It’s always amazing, discovering new areas in a city (a smaller one at that) in which you have lived in for the better part of your life. With my Canon 1DX II and my point and shoot camera in hand, I set out to see what all the fuss was about.
The area in Thunder Bay where the ice is located is right next to an old shut down mill. I know I’m a bit of a different breed because I was immediately drawn to all old mill and the surrounding area. If I had my boots on, instead of running shoes, I would have explored even further. Then again, I see the beauty in the ordinary things. There were a lot of great scenes leading up to the ice that I bet a lot of people miss, because they only have that one on their mind. I’m not saying that knock anyone down, I just think it’s important to take a step back sometime and obverse the whole scene.
I will have to go back with my wife, now that I know where this hidden gem is. But, there was no shortage of people on the ice. It allowed me to get some great perspective photos. I only went on the small part of the ice trail, as that was good enough for me. I just didn’t feel completely safe going out on to the actual mini icebergs. Perhaps with boots I may have.
I was only there for about 45 minutes but it was enough time to take it all in. I am looking forward to showing it to my wife when I get a chance. I may even try and get some video as well. Just when you thought you have photographed Lake Superior and the Sleeping Giant from every angle, you quickly learn that there are so many other spots in and around the city that you don’t even know about. I’m looking forward to finding more of them!
