One of my recent camera purchases after selling a lot of my gear that I wasn’t using was a true point and shoot camera. I ended up choosing the Canon G7X II. Seeing as how my professional cameras are all Canon full frames, and I love the files that come from Canon, I decided to give the super compact, but extremely capable Canon G7X II a try. It’s not the latest version, but I rarely buy the latest greatest cameras. A lot of times, I buy older models used or, at the very least, new ones at a discounted price because they have been out for a while, or an updated version has been released.
I have owned many compact cameras before. Everything from the X100 series to the Ricoh GR II. I have since sold those cameras and I wanted to get something truly pocketable. Enter the G7X II. From countless Youtube videos and reviews I had seen the image quality holds up well and everything from autofocus and metering work well. Let’s just say I was blown away by how this camera performs.
To put into perspective, I often have no problems walking around with the my 1DX II and the 50mm 1.2 for my street/urban photography. But that gets tiring after a while and it’s definitely not the most compact and discreet combo. I still own the original Canon M which I love, and even the Sony a6400 which is a powerhouse. But even those cameras are still somewhat big.
I decided to bring the GX7 II to the airport yesterday to get my ‘street photography’ on. Thunder Bay is a smaller city so there aren’t always a lot of people around. I figured the airport would be a good test of how the Canon performs. It did so flawlessly. No one paid any attention to me, and I most likely looked a like a tourist. Have the zoom range this camera offers allowed me to get shots I wouldn’t have been able to capture with my usual prime lens set up.
I always shoot in RAW because I love post processing my photos. The colours came out great but I decided I wanted more of a black and white vibe for this set. This camera will be joining me everyday from now own. I’m looking forward to seeing all the photos I will be capturing!
