One of my recent camera purchases after selling a lot of my gear that I wasn’t using was a true point and shoot camera. I ended up choosing the Canon G7X II. Seeing as how my professional cameras are all Canon full frames, and I love the files that come from Canon, I decided to give the super compact, but extremely capable Canon G7X II a try. It’s not the latest version, but I rarely buy the latest greatest cameras. A lot of times, I buy older models used or, at the very least, new ones at a discounted price because they have been out for a while, or an updated version has been released.

Just before I left the house for my walk I almost took my Nikon D750 with me but I decided on my trusty Ricoh GRII instead. I knew I wouldn’t be able to get my usual shallow depth of field shots that I capture with the Nikon primes, but the Ricoh forced me to shoot in a completely different way. Plus, it’s extremely small and fun to use.

It's easy nowadays to get caught up in all the latest gear and think you need the most expensive equipment or the newest model of a particular camera. God knows I struggle with G.A.S. (gear acquisition syndrome) everyday. I always find myself looking through Amazon or reading reviews. I do my best to keep a level head and decide if I REALLY need that new camera or lens. Will it make me a better photographer? Can I do anything different with that new camera that I can't already accomplish with what I have? In most cases the answer is usually no.
