One of the streets I have been taking photos up and down for the past 10 years more than any other, would probably be Simpson Street. I never get tired of exploring the side streets and back alleys of this old part of town. Whether it’s the small details most people miss or the street scenes, I always find something interesting to capture.
Sadly, there are a few burnt down buildings here and there and I know that speaks to the state of the area. At the same time, I think it’s important to document the way the neighbourhood is changing. Looking back on some of these photos in the distant future will be interesting. Hopefully things change for the better but only time will tell.
I even tried some long exposure photos here and there. I didn’t have a tripod with me as I never carry one around when I’m walking the streets. That doesn’t mean you can’t do long exposures though. All you need to do is find something to rest the camera on, or have a very steady hand. Some of my favourite types of long exposure photos are actually moving the camera with a long shutter speed, creating an almost abstract effect.
I’m looking forward to revisiting this technique in the near future. Until then!
