When my wife told me we would be camping in the middle of nowhere, in the winter, my first thought was that I hope I don’t die. I was scared. I’m not really a camping type of guy. We have done the trow bridge thing a bunch of times but at least I’m a 10 minute drive from home in that case. Graham Lake Road was where this camping trip happened. It ended up being about 1.5 hours outside of Thunder Bay. It’s actually just off the highway, and then a 40 minute drive up a dirt road.
Luckily, everyone we went with were experienced campers. I really didn’t have anything to worry about. Initially we were going to stay for one night but it ended up being two. I’m glad we did stay longer because I did have a great time after it was all said and done. To be honest, I didn’t have to do anything other than stay warm and eat food that was prepared for me and everyone else.
Where we camped was right on the lake so it allowed from some very pretty photos throughout the day. I made sure to take advantage of the morning light and also some evening photos too. There were about 12 total people give or take, along with some kids too. I knew I just wanted to document the experience as best I could, so I made sure to not only get the scenery but also the people.
The first night in the tent was pretty cold but I made sure to stay under the covers. The second night wasn’t as bad but still quite chilly. It was me, my wife Anne and her mom in the same tent. We laughed afterwards that second night because after her mom got up she put all her blankets on me and one small one on Anne. Talk about spoiled. If you looked at my bed, blankets were piled at least 2 feet in the air, while my wife Anne had next to nothing on her. I felt quite important.
The weekend flew by but it was so relaxing. It was a nice change to be disconnected from everything. I’m already looking forward to the next trip in 2020. I think there is talk of doing it a bit earlier in the year though, which would be nice. It is a bit tough doing things in such cold weather. Until then!
